It is very gross, and has happened to most women I know that their dog finds and rips to shreds used female products. What is the reason?

they smell the blood and are attracted to it

Quite simply, Dogs are carnivores, and the smell of blood attracts and excites them. It’s a natural thing. The solution is to not leave your used feminine hygene products where the dog can get to them. Simply find a trash container with a lid that closes.
